Chapter Twenty

Tony had suspected the remote possibility of Matthew Cooper being involved in Patrick Fowler’s disappearance, but having it confirmed enveloped him with a deep chill.

Kristen Cooper stood up and nearly toppled over her chair. “Patrick Fowler was not murdered, Jeremy!”

Her husband cowered, but held firm. “Well, what would you call it?”

“Patrick disappeared into thin air. That’s it. He was there, and then he wasn’t. I wouldn’t call that ‘murder’.”

“The effect is the same. He was taken from this life. He no longer exists!”

Tony intervened, hoping to stop fresh bickering. “So you’re telling me your son just vaporized Patrick Fowler using his magic?”

“Yes,” Jeremy answered.

“Why?”

“Patrick was a bully,” Kristen snapped. “I would never say Matthew had a right to do what he did, but that’s how it ended up. Patrick picked on Matthew for quite a few years.”

Tony recalled the comparative physiques of each boy from their respective photographs. He could visualize the two of them side by side. It wasn’t difficult to perceive Patrick towering over the younger Matthew.

“The Fowlers say Patrick was the victim of bullying,” said Tony.

Kristen guffawed. “Victim, my foot! Patrick was called to the headmaster’s office many times for picking on the other kids. The Fowlers always denied the problem. We complained to school board countless times about Patrick, and the headmaster was totally on our side.” She looked aside at her husband.

Jeremy nodded. “It’s true.”

“Tell me what happened the day Patrick disappeared,” Tony said, prodding further. He held up his hand. “And how do you know Matthew did what you said he did?”

“He told us,” Jeremy said. His chin began to quiver as he recalled the moment. “He admitted everything when he got home. He said, ‘Mum, Dad, I got rid of Patrick Fowler for good.’ We were totally shocked. I grabbed him by the arms and asked him to explain everything. He said Patrick punched him in the ribs, until Matthew begged him to stop. Then he ran into the woods behind the school, with Patrick in pursuit. Matthew came back, but Patrick never did.”

Tony flattened his lips. “So that’s why he was never charged. There was no evidence.”

“Exactly. That’s probably the best reason the police never seriously contemplated charging Matthew with any crime. They assumed someone was lurking around those woods and kidnapped Patrick. There was no way Matthew could have killed Patrick and hidden his body in such a short time.”

Tony pondered. “What did you do when Matthew told you?”

Kristen spoke quickly with an excited pitch. “What could we do? Jeremy and I discussed whether or not to turn him in to the police, but how could we? He was our little boy!”

Jeremy added, “It was too easy for him to use his magic, and he didn’t foresee the consequences. He never thought about the possibility that he couldn’t bring Patrick back. And even if we came forward, there was no way the police would ever believe us.”

“Unless we forced Matthew to demonstrate to them that he had magical powers,” Kristen pointed out.
